Here are the answers to the puzzle on Page 6A of today’s The Monitor.
Which Idol’s in the slammer?April 30th, 2007, 9:42 am by bgarcia
Hints: 1) She’s from Season 4. 2) She was at one time the victim of a stalker. 3) She was known as much for her D-cup as for her voice. Who is it? LAME: They’re all safeApril 25th, 2007, 6:22 pm by bgarciaSo the producers gave everyone a break and no one is eliminated. How un-thrilling. They should have brought back Sanjaya. The Top 6: Maritza’s a little lateApril 25th, 2007, 2:39 pm by bgarciaHere are Maritza’s comments from last night. An electrical outage delayed her Idol delight. It’s a Very Special Television Event as American Idol Gives Back … after taking so very, very, very much. The Top 6 share their “Life Anthems” with us — and from what we’ve heard of their rumored song choices, it’s going to be a loooong night. Join the Idol Chat judges in praying that we will be spared tunes like “The Wind Beneath My Wings” and “We Are The World” or — gasp — a visit from Sally Struthers. Top 6: Song spoilersApril 24th, 2007, 12:29 pm by bgarciaBy Brandon Garcia, Idol Chat Editor Here are the rumored songs the Top 6 will sing tonight. I’ve got a gut feeling these are more on the mark than the ones I found out week: Chris Richardson “Change The World” (Eric Clapton & Babyface) — Good choice, forgot about this song. Melinda Doolittle “There Will Come A Day” (Faith Hill) — Haven’t heard it. Blake Lewis “Imagine” (John Lennon) — Yawn. LaKisha Jones “I Believe” (Fantasia Barrino) — One of the better Idol singles. Still lacking imagination. Phil Stacey “The Change” (Garth Brooks) — Haven’t heard it, but shrewd move sticking to country. Jordin Sparks “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (From Carousel) — Sounds like Disney Jordin is back. Request Line: Your life anthem … my funeral dirgeApril 23rd, 2007, 9:08 pm by bgarciaBy Brandon Garcia, Idol Chat Editor THIS WEEK’S THEME: “Life anthems” This broad theme leaves open the possibility of some cool choices since anything under the sun relating to living life will be up for grabs (that’s at least 60 percent of all pop song topics right there). Then again, American Idol contestants sometimes seem like they have to be dragged kicking and screaming from schmaltz-fest standards like “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Hilarious new term, btw. GUEST JUDGE: Unknown, possibly none WHO WILL DO WELL: Those who read my Request Line WHO WILL BOMB: Those who don’t BANNED SONGS: “Beautiful” (Christina Aguilera); “We Are The World” (Michael Jackson); the aforementioned “Wings”
“Rehab” Amy Winehouse – A very eyebrow-raising current hit that sounds like a lost Nina Simone number. And an amazing screw-you to the predictable theme. Last week we finally got a break from Goodie-Two-Shoes Melinda … let’s keep her locked up.
“Beautiful Day” (U2) – Perfect rousing showcase for Phil’s ace-in-the-hole glory notes.
“Free Your Mind” (En Vogue) — A dynamite, hard-rock-tinged attack on prejudice sung by soul divas. I would kill to hear this from LaKisha — it’s just the sort of return-with-a-vengeance comeback she needs.
“Heaven Is A Place On Earth” (Belinda Carlisle) *— It’s the musical equivalent of a great doughnut with none of the guilt. It’s ’80s sparkle outshines the teeny-bopper pallor.*This video is quite possibly the greatest ever made. It’s like Nick Jr.’s version of Eyes Wide Shut.
“Crazy” (Seal) — Blake never sounded better than when he pulled this out of his hat back in the audition rounds. A left-field pick that’ll help him keep his “cred.”
“The River” (Garth Brooks) — An earnest if simplistic Garth hit that’ll wash Chris clean from the mess he made last week. I think Chris needs to make good on his disastrous Country Week performance. Phil got to walk away with the “country singer” title when I think Chris actually fits more comfortably into that mold. Sanjaya says bye-byaApril 18th, 2007, 6:43 pm by bgarciaBy Brandon Garcia, Idol Chat Editor While I’m happy for my fellow Idol Chat panelist J. Cantu, who after weeks finally gets to change his shirt, I can’t help but feel a little downhearted that I don’t have Sanjaya Malakar to brighten the beginning of my week. Sanjaya is without doubt the worst singer and performer ever to make it this far on American Idol, and there have been some truly god-awful contestants. As the joke of the season, he unwittingly became the most popular, and the most hated over the years. Sanjaya’s presence made us question the very soul of the show — is it a singing contest or a popularity contest? Will sensationalism win out over true talent? Fortunately, no. But I am glad Sanjaya survived over singers such as Stephanie Edwards, Brandon Rogers and Haley Scarnato. While those contestants were trying to win over America with bright smiles and disco standards, Sanjaya gave us little nuggets of Idoliciousness, like his glorious, ever-changing hair and golden catchphrases like “Welcome to the Universe of Sanjaya.” Sanjaya put many of his yawn-inducing opponents in their place, proving every week that it’s better to be awful than merely mediocre — the middle ground is the world’s most barren territory. American Idol needed to be reminded of that this year more than any other. So hats off to you, Sanjaya. You’re the true winner this year, no matter what the haters may say. There’s really only one performance that you need to see Sanjaya, and these two minutes are better than anything you’ll see from here until the finale: “You Really Got Me” |
